Roving Exhibition of the 2018 New Series Hong Kong Banknotes

Oval Design had worked with the HKMA for over a year to develop a comprehensive promotion programme in the hope of deepening people’s understanding of the designs and the anti-counterfeiting features of the new banknotes prior to their release in the fourth quarter of 2018. The programme included a launching ceremony, a roving exhibition across Hong Kong and a mobile game app.

The Roving Exhibition

With the objective to introduce the design and security features of the new banknotes to the public, a roving exhibition was staged across the territory starting from 25 July, featuring interactive presentations and videos in addition to information graphics regarding the new banknotes. An interactive table as an integrated information hub, where people could take a closer and clearer look at the security features by enlarging the images of the new banknotes. There were also videos featuring the thematic designs of the new series and the stories behind, as well as an AR Game, which visitors could play by activating it with their smartphones and learn interesting facts about the banknotes.

The Mobile Game App

In order to further get Hong Kong people familiar with the new designs of the banknotes, Oval Design made use of advanced technology and helped HKMA develop a GPS game, which required players to travel to different places in Hong Kong to collect icons that represented the five thematic subjects of the new banknotes. To align with the strong local characteristics of the new banknotes’ thematic subjects, Oval Design also hoped to encourage people to discover the city through the game.

In the game, there were 30 icons in total, five for each theme. To provide an incentive for people to download the app, once a player managed to collect at least one icon for each theme, the player would receive a QR code that by scanning it in the roving exhibition, player can get a chance to win a limited-edition miniature HKMA Coin Cart (1000 quotas) in a lucky draw.
