HKIA Master Plan 2030

Exhibition

This exhibition design played with the visual rhyme between a vibrantly growing tree and the thematic graphic symbol of “2030 Our Airport Our Future” developed by the Hong Kong International Airport. To add a good dosage of fun for visitors as well as creating instant associations with the subject matter of the exhibition, signature airport and aviation features including runway, air traffic control tower, terminal building, cockpit etc. were also incorporated in the design.

The tree form was embraced in all the aspects of the exhibition from layout planning to structural and graphic designs. Partitioning structures looking like branches of a tree divided the exhibition venue into seven irregular-shape thematic zones. The entrance to the exhibition resembled a tree trunk and also a runway, the resemblance to the latter was further conveyed by markings on the carpet, concealed floor lights and a 3-dimensional airplane prop suspending from the ceiling.

At one thematic zone, the vibrantly growing tree took the form of arches and flying buttresses and “crawling” structures on the wall looking like branches. And three large airplane props in take-off position were in fact “private cinemas”, each allowing one visitor to watch videos on the future development of the Airport in an reclining seat, much like a pilot watching the overhead control panels in a cockpit.

Two interactive models with sophisticated interactive features illustrated the future development of the HKIA. Projectors concealed in the base of the model stand projected animated films onto the interactive models made completely of clear acrylic plastic. The effect produced was such that visitors were to see, for example, planes taking off and landing on a third runway; new road link to the airport with moving traffic, new ferry pier with approaching boats etc. Additionally, touch-screen monitors were installed next to the model to enable visitors to view detailed information on any aspect of future development of the HKIA featured in the model.
